Sassafras Mountain is the highest peak in South Carolina and from the top you can see four states: South Carolina, North Carolina, Georgia and Tennessee. You can ride almost all the way to the top of the mountain and a short walk to an overlook gives a spectacular view. From Travelers Rest to Sassafras Mountain head South on Hwy 276 up to Marietta. Veer left onto Hwy 288 right beside Slater Drug Store, pass through Pumpkintown and at the end of Hwy 288 turn right onto Hwy 178. Cross Highway 11 and continue toward Rocky Bottom. A familiar site along the way is a little bar called "Bobs Place". Just past the green Rocky Bottom sign there are two roads turning right very close to each other. Take the 2nd right to go up the mountain. There is a parking lot at the top and just a short walk to the peak.   This is one of the places I enjoy going to most.

There are several look-out points at the top of the mountain and some unique large boulders.  As you come back down the mountain there are a few roads that turn off to the right. One of them will take you into Brevard but I am not sure which it is.  Enjoy!

After a great time in Maggie Valley with my friend Joe, I think Sassafras Mountain would be in order for a Thursday ride. The weather is perfect and temps are wonderful in the mountains. It is not that I don't believe you about this ride, but I just want to see it myself!!! Thanks.
